Debunking Myths about Acne

Clearing acne for good means avoiding bad habits that can aggravate the infection and inflammation; but sometimes, bad habits are not really the problem but the wrong information and ideas about the condition that you get from unverified sources and the media.

There are lots of information that have been passed on from generation to generation that are not scientifically backed at all. They constitute myths that when left uncorrected can make matters worse. Now, before learning the do’s of acne busting, it is perhaps more effective to start the discussion by explaining to you the don’ts by debunking myths because the first step to learning is unlearning.

Myth #1: Scrubbing is the best way to clean the face. Fact: Scrubbing is a good way to hurt your face. When you scrub your body, you remove more dirt and dead skin cells, making your complexion cleaner, clearer and smoother. However, the thickness of the skin elsewhere in the body is far different from the delicate thinness of the skin on the face. This will only create tiny lesions and scars on your face that can actually start a breakout. Worse, if you already have acne breakout, scrubbing may increase the inflammation because the nodules are forced to break.

What is meant by scrubbing?

It refers to the use of washcloth, facecloth and any cleansing scrubs that come with micro-beads and other active cleansing ingredients. The friction caused by using scrubbers can irritate the pore walls and surface tissues, prompting them to inflame even more. You have to literally avoid any form of scrubbing if you want to treat your breakout faster and maintain a clear skin longer.

Micro beads in cleansers can also clog pores, so instead of cleaning them, the beads will stop sebum from going out, causing nodules and pus in the process.

Myth #2: Frequent washing of the face will prevent bacteria from worsening the skin lesions and inflammation. Fact: Frequent washing of the face will make your skin even dryer. Okay, the statement is partially true because bacteria will definitely not thrive on a clean skin surface. Hence, further infection will be prevented.

But what if I told you about an oil which is super easy to make and can leave you with flawless skin? Rose petals have excess oil absorbing, swelling prevention and soothing properties, whose benefits we can reap once it’s infused with a carrier oil. All you need is a bowl of shredded rose petals. Add these petals into the mason jar filled with a carrier oil of your choice and give it a good stir. I’d always recommend using Jojoba since it’s lightweight- perfect for acne prone skin. Meanwhile heat water in a pan and switch it off when it comes to a boil. Using the heat of the water to infuse the two- place the jar into the hot water until it cools down. You can strain this or add fresher rose petals that will infuse with the oils in time and become even more effective. Apart from acne, this facial oil should be a must have if you are stepping into the confusing world of anti ageing since it helps build collagen and elasticity. You can also use this as a cuticle moisturiser as it's incredibly hydrating! Soothing creams and balms are super handy when it comes to scars, rashes, eczema and even swelling. Since they can be a little expensive, I always make some on my own. For this I like to use chamomile and calendula. Antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory they are an absolute blessing for those with sensitive skin. I add the mildly grinded herbs and add equal amounts of coconut and sweet almond oil. Using the double boiler method I let the two influse on low heat for about 4 hours and then strain! You can use this as or make it more effective by using beeswax since it has moisturising and anti-inflammatory properties. Heat the infused oil and then add grated beeswax to this, and store away! This healing balm has the power to heal the skin, helping newer and healthier tissues to grow back! Serum has become an unskippable part of my skincare routine. But to be honest they are way too many out there and only a few were fitting my budget. Thankfully I was able to use herbal infusions and create what I call a magic potion. Green Tea happens to be one of my favourite ingredients since it’s an antioxidant that detoxifies the skin inside out paving way for glowing, healthy skin! The first step is to create the infused oil which requires green tea and Olive oil. I place them in a mason jar and allow it to infuse for about 4 weeks by keeping it in a warm and dark place. This is because serums essentially need to be strong and potent and hence the more time you give to the infusion the better. Once out, strain it and make a super hydrating and nourishing concoction by adding 12 drops of rosemary essential oil, 12 organic lavender essential oil, 4 tbsp of jojoba oil and 2 TBSP of sunflower oil! A little goes a long way so store it in an oil dropper or low volume pump and use it daily for hydrated, supple skin! Is your body always dry, scaly and rough and none of the store bought creams doing their job? Maybe it’s time to give it some love with this amazing body oil recipe! This herbal body oil uses the power of dried hibiscus flowers- a natural source of AHA’s that will pull the moisture into your skin, Bamboo leaf tea that helps in cell rejuvenation. I even like to mix some fresh herbs like thyme and mint for added scent! For the oil I like to use grapeseed and almond so it can really hydrate and moisturise my skin. Mix the two and keep it stored in a bottle for about 4 weeks in and you have your super fragrant and deeply moisturising body oil ready. Use this everyday for baby soft and smooth skin! There is absolutely nothing that the power of herbs cannot achieve- even if it’s healthy and perfect skin. Until next time stay tuned and stay glamours!
